Gabby Barrett tells Songwriters Universe that her time on "American Idol" was a lot more challenging than she thought it would be. "American Idol was like being on a roller coaster—it’s the best way to explain it. You know, growing up and watching it on TV, when you watched American Idol, it was like the golden show. All the other shows were great, but Idol was the one that you wanted to be on. And after performing live for so many years, I remember thinking, Oh, [being on Idol], that’s just people performing on TV; that’s easy, I can do that. And then I got on the show, and it was way more than that. I realized that no matter how prepared you are for something, you’re going to be faced with challenges. So it was a real roller coaster of emotions—I was always nervous, happy, sad or excited. It was an amazing journey, something that I’ll always take with me for the rest of my career."

Britney hasn’t had the proper help she needs to be able to control her own finances, to fully deal with her mental health issues, to be the mother she wants to be. Jamie won’t let her have any freedom or responsibility over her own life. This summer, her father grounded her for three weeks because she dared to meet a friend for a socially-distanced walk on the beach and a heart-to-heart conversation. She’s 39 years old! He doesn’t want her to see her friends, he doesn’t want her to meet other people in the entertainment business, he tells her that everyone has bad intentions for her — when it plainly isn’t true.”

''Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s. They’re trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.''
