Keeping Secrets Study A new study by Columbia University reveals that keeping positive secrets can make people feel more energized and alive. Researchers studied over 2,500 participants after asking them to reflect on positive news that they kept a secret. The secrets included events like saving money, buying a gift for themselves, and reducing debt. The team found that keeping positive secrets reflected well on the participants' well-being. The study suggests that keeping good secrets for personal enjoyment can be both exciting and enjoyable. Lead study author Michael Slepian says. "Decades of research on secrecy suggest it is bad for our well-being, but this work has only examined keeping secrets that have negative implications for our lives. Is secrecy inherently bad for our well-being, or do the negative effects of secrecy tend to stem from keeping negative secrets? While negative secrets are far more common than positive secrets, some of life's most joyful occasions begin as secrets, including secret marriage proposals, pregnancies, surprise gifts and exciting news ... rather than based in external pressures, positive secrets are more often chosen due to personal desires and internal motives. When we feel that our actions arise from our own desires rather than external pressures, we also feel ready to take on whatever lies ahead."

Dear Fonseca,

My cousin is hosting Thanksgiving this year. A guest list started circulating yesterday on a group family email. My mouth hit the floor because my aunt is bringing my ex-girlfriend along. I called my cousin and complained. She says my aunt is more than welcome to bring my ex because all family members without kids are allowed a +1. She says she would extend the same courtesy to me if I wanted to bring a family member's ex-partner. She says no one should be alone for the holidays. I think it's wrong what my aunt is doing. My cousin is defending her. Whose side are you taking? My cousin says I'm being immature. Am I? Should family members be allowed to bring ex-partners to holiday dinners?
