Dear Fonseca,
I ate at one of our area's most beloved and well-known restaurants the other night. I was shocked when I got my bill because there was a $3 AC fee on it. I asked my server what the fee was for because I had never seen one like that on any bill. She said the AC stands for ‘air conditioner’. The owner then came out. He said he added the fee because customers were warm and demanding he get a better air conditioner. I told the owner I was not going to pay the fee because I didn't have a problem with the air conditioning before or after he bought his new unit. The owner refused to remove the fee from my bill. I told him it would be the same as if I was charged for a menu item I didn't order. He disagreed and said the AC is the customer's responsibility not his because they asked for it. I am now disputing the charge with my credit card company. Should customers have to foot the bill or is it the restaurant owner’s cost of doing business? Am I right to feel angry or is this fee just part of keeping cool in today’s world?
